Gravel bike? Nah, Cyclocross bike? Alright! This is my New Old Stock (NOS) 2007 Kona Jake the Snake in size 52 that’s come straight out of the original box (it’s never been ridden!). The shop owner Mark at Vanilla Cycles had the frameset in storage, took it out and whacked a mish mash of low-spec parts on it; Microshift Advent X, Tektro brakes, all stuff headed for my parts bin.
It’s one of the first gen models which uses Easton Ultralite Race tubing (Made in USA), but even so it came in at a hefty 9.86kg. The build was a bit of a headfuck as I wanted to get a hydraulic brake on the front for more braking power, but still wanted to keep the standard rim brake rear.
In the end it’s more of an XBIKING build, and definitely one of my “loosest” builds to date as I’ve used a lot of parts from AliExpress as well as bits from my parts bin. The 105 mechanical “groupset of the people” came off my Allez Sprint, the Dura Ace crankset (AKA boat anchor) came off my S5 and ZEN Carbon Bike came to the party with a custom thru axle disc brake front wheel and rim brake rear wheel.
