If you’re in Sydney, and you’re into bikes in any capacity and you’re not attending the monthly bike rave – you might be missing out on one of the best bike events out there.
Not sure what that is, exactly? Well it’s essentially a party, on bikes. Booming speakers crank dance, trance house and even a bit of industrial to keep the group moving.
If there’s ever an event that embodies the concept of ‘It’s OK if you don’t get it’ – this is it.
Starting out at Redfern station, Justin and I met up with 100 or so other riders in the thick summer evening sun. A huge mix of bikes, from aero road bikes to folding commuters and everything in between. Just after 7 we headed out on a 20-something kilometre circuit from Redfern, to Ultimo, over to Darling Harbour, Barrangaroo, up to the CBD before ripping around a night time loop of Centennial Park then back down to Redfern. Finishing up at a local brewery with a complimentary schooner of choice. Bikes, Beats, Beers and Banter. What’s not to love?
The vibe was unreal, it was something like being a kid again and roaming the neighborhood, but supercharged. And you’d think a huge gang of cyclists cranking booming rave music might be a bit obnoxious – but the most surprising aspect was just how many people were cheering us on, dancing, taking photos from the sidewalk and overall just loving the energy. Positivity by the bucketloads.
