The S5 just looks so damn fast sitting still and I love how the older S5 looks vs. the new one, especially in the matte black frame + gloss black fork and logos. The new one piece cockpit just doesn’t do it for me (that ‘bump’ in the middle of the bars looks fugly) and IMHO the new bike’s deep headtube looks out of proportion with everything else. I don’t make enough power to get the most out of a full on aero bike, but I think they look amaaaaazing!
When the new S5 came out everyone sold off their old ones but I missed that train, so I spent weeks refreshing FB Marketplace like a mad man for a size 51 and then bam! There she was. I found one, in Sydney and in as new condition. What’s even better is that it’s in the colourway I like the most (gloss black fork, matte black frame).
I tried my best to not go full weight weenie on an aero bike but in the end the disease was too strong and nothing but the groupset and frame is original (lol). As much as I love my S-Works SL8 I find myself grabbing the S5 more and more. It just looks other worldly to me and I love the black on black on black theme (especially the black chain and cassette). Whilst it puts me in a more aggressive stretched and low down position (IE: it’s uncomfortable) it’s just so damn fast and the conical ratchets I installed on the XMCS wheelset make the loudest most obnoxious sound (I’m obsessed!).
