Next up on the ‘We Didn’t Get That Here’ series, we take a closer look at the 210-Series Toyota Crown Athlete.
The Toyota Crown has proudly anchored Toyota’s luxury sedan lineup for 70 years – since 1955. The last Australian-delivered Crowns landed in 1988, and Toyota Australia hasn’t officially imported a Toyota Crown since. This is likely due to the small size of the Australian market (versus other nations), the locally-built large sedans (RIP Commodore / Statesman / Caprice and Falcon / Fairlane) and the potential for luxury Toyotas to cannibalise local Lexus sales.
The chrome outline of the Crown emblem is evident on the Lexus GS of the same generation – sharing the same fundamentals and underpinnings; chassis, suspension, drivetrain, et cetera.
Toyota’s e-CVT is just about the most reliable CVT configuration available today. The e-CVT enables seamless operation between the petrol engine and electric motors, and achieves real-world fuel economy figures as low as 5L per 100km! This car’s long term average is 5.8L/100km on a 80/20 mix of city / highway.
The Crown embodies Toyota’s Core Principles including ‘Kaizen’ meaning ‘commitment to continuous improvement’ across generations, and “Monozukuri” describing ‘the art of making things’ which underscores Toyota’s dedication to craftsmanship and quality.
Strictly business.
The 210-Series Crowns listed under SEVS come in the following engline and drivetrain configurations;
– 3.2L 6-cylinder RWD
– 3.2L 6-cylinder RWD Hybrid
– 2.5L 4-cylinder RWD (shown)
The ‘Athlete’ is the sportier Crown, with more focus on driver enjoyment and response.
You drive the Athlete.
The ‘Majesta’ is pure luxury – prioritising the comfort for rear-seat passengers.
Someone else drives you in your Majesta.
The shadow-chrome factory wheels are striking, and in my opinion one of the best factory wheels to come on a Japanese car of this era. Just don’t kerb them!
